COREY MASON CAPTURES CHAMPIONSHIP BY WINNING CREATIVE COUNTERS SALUTE TO SUMMER EVENT

The point battles for Speedway 51 powered by the Autosaver Group top three divisions have been decided and several championship positions were not decided until the drivers crossed the start / finish line on the final lap. Race winners on the night included Corey Mason, Derrick Calkins, Kasey Beattie and Alexus Call. The evening was clouded somewhat as local citizen Stevie Russ passed away earlier in the day. Russ was a friend to everyone in the Groveton community, as you would always see him walking and sitting on benches around the Groveton community waving and talking to everybody. He will surely be missed.

The North Country Ford Late Model Series championship was on the line with point leader Corey Mason with a relatively safe lead going into the 100 lap main event. Mason weaved through traffic in the early going and took over the lead from Brendan Moodie on lap 27. Chip Grenier followed Mason up through and took over second spot a few laps later. The race was on to the checkers, and try as he could Grenier was no match for Mason, as Mason collected his third win of the year and the championship. Grenier placed second ahead of Randy Potter, Brendan Moodie and Mike Kenison. Heat wins went to Potter and Kenison.

Brendan Moodie had already clinched the Perras Ace Hardware Tiger Sportsman championship, but he was hoping to pull off a victory on championship night. Unfortunately Derrick Calkins denied Moodie’s plans by winning the main event. Moodie settled for second place ahead of John Boutin, Floyd Bennett Jr. and Kyle Streeter. Original third place finisher Mike Giroux failed post race inspection due to a wheel infraction. Ryan Boutin and Brian Gosselin won the qualifying events.

The tightest point battle of the night came right down to the final checkered flag in the Caron Fabrication Street Stocks. Thirteen year old Kasey Beattie ran the race of his young life as he scored his second win of 2017. Beattie’s victory was not an easy one as he first battled Allan Birch for the first 18 laps, then had to hold off runner-up, Brett Rowell to the end. Dean Switser Jr., Bunker Hodgdon and Kevin Streeter rounded out the top five. Rowell won the preliminary event. Bunker Hodgdon claimed his second straight Street Stock title.

Alexus Call won a torrid battle with Julian Kenison in the A.B. Excavating Daredevil feature. The pair swapped the lead three times in the final five laps before Call got out front to stay. Hunter King and Makita Giroux followed the lead pair to the stripe. King carried the heat checkers.
